Overview

About Chiado.

Chiado was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake under the Marquês de Pombal, giving it the wide, symmetrical streets and elegant stone buildings that define the neighbourhood today. It sits on the ridge between Bairro Alto and the Baixa, which means you get views in multiple directions and easy walking access to the river, the Alfama, and the newer parts of the city. The neighbourhood is known for Bertrand Livraria (the world's oldest operating bookshop), the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos opera house, and a density of excellent restaurants, wine bars and boutiques that few Lisbon neighbourhoods can match. Property here ranges from classic Pombaline apartments — with high ceilings, wooden floors and balconies — to fully modernised penthouse conversions. Demand is consistently strong from international buyers and the short-let market, which keeps values resilient.

Life in Chiado

What it is like to live here.

01

Culture and intellectual life

Chiado has been Lisbon's bohemian and literary quarter for over two centuries. Bertrand Livraria, founded in 1732, is still here and still busy. The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos brings world-class opera and classical music. The Museu do Chiado holds the best collection of Portuguese modern art in the city. There is always something on.

02

Restaurants and café society

The neighbourhood has more Michelin-starred restaurants per square kilometre than anywhere else in Lisbon. Café A Brasileira — where Fernando Pessoa used to sit — remains an institution. The streets around Rua do Alecrim and Rua Nova do Almada are lined with wine bars, natural wine shops and restaurants that draw Lisboetas as much as visitors.

03

Shopping and daily life

Chiado has evolved into one of Lisbon's best shopping neighbourhoods — not just for tourists, but for residents. Independent boutiques sit alongside FNAC, Zara and El Corte Inglés' Chiado outpost. There is a covered market (Mercado do Chiado), a SuperBock Store for wine, and everything you need for daily life within a short walk.

04

Architecture and street character

The Pombaline architecture gives Chiado an unusual grandeur for a central Lisbon neighbourhood. Buildings are typically five or six storeys, with decorated stone facades, wrought-iron balconies and ornate entrance halls. Many have been carefully restored; a few remain in original condition. The streets are paved with calçada portuguesa and the neighbourhood has a refined, unhurried quality despite being central.
